Pets are family members and it is important to have peace of mind regarding the care of your pets while you are away. While there are many very reputable well-run kennels and boarding facilities available, some pets are just more comfortable in their own familiar surroundings. The home environment is a much more secure, familiar and friendly setting. This is especially important for family members who are "rescue" or adopted or have age-related or health-related special care needs to be addressed. There is nothing which can replace individual loving care in the home.

What qualifications to look for in a pet sitter

Proof of insurance/bonding
What type of training/experience
Are notes being taken about your pet(s)
What backups are available in case of illness, car trouble, or weather related issues
Experience in administering special care needs - walking, medications, play time, etc.
Is a contract provided with the explanation of services and fees
Request made for key or garage door code
If providing overnight services, are specific time frames detailed within the contract
Are arrangements made to contact owner to confirm return
Provides references and phone numbers
Asks for emergency numbers and neighbor's number or local contact

Always make sure the pet sitter is willing to make arrangements to meet with the owner and pet prior to the scheduled pet sit. Watch to see how they interact and the pet interacts with them. It may be beneficial to schedule a trial day where the owner is gone for a daily trip to see how well the pet sitter meets your expectations.
